Do I need to register my vessel on the New Zealand Register of Ships?

Generally speaking there are 2 trigger points to determine whether your vessel needs to be registered.

• Is she over 24m LOA? If the answer is yes then as a general proposition the vessel must be registered on the Register of Ships; and
• Will you be proceeding on an international voyage (leaving NZ waters for a foreign port)? If the answer is yes, under the Ship Registration Act 1992 and international law, the vessel must have nationality (flag) and accordingly must be registered on the Register of Ships.
